Getting your credentials and language competency assessed

To begin the certification process with a participating provincial or territorial regulatory body for the teaching profession, you first need to get your credentials and/or your language competency assessed. This is an essential step for internationally educated teachers (IETs) who wish to teach in Canada.

Provinces and territories that require credential assessments through Pathways to Teach Canada

A credential assessment is required to initiate the certification process with any of the following participating provincial or territorial regulatory bodies for the teaching profession through Pathways to Teach Canada:

IMPORTANT
  • The credential assessment report provided by Pathways to Teach Canada is NOT accepted by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT), and the OCT will conduct its own credential assessment.

Provinces and territories that accept the LCATP through Pathways to Teach Canada

The following participating provincial and territorial bodies for the teaching profession accept the LCATP (this assessment is administered exclusively by Pathways to Teach Canada):

IMPORTANT
  • The Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) accepts the LCAPT as well as other language competency assessments. Visit their website for more information.

Step 3: Request an assessment and complete the payment

You will be requesting a credential assessment and/or a Language Competency Assessment for the Teaching Profession (LCATP).

Step 4: Start the assessment

Your credential assessment is carried out by World Education Services (WES) via your Pathways to Teach Canada account.

Your LCATP is scheduled via your Pathways to Teach Canada account (on the Pathways portal).

Timeframes and tracking status

You will be able to track the status of your assessments on your Pathways to Teach Canada account. You will receive a notification once the assessment reports/results are available.

Submitting your assessment report/results

You will submit your credential assessment and/or your LCATP report/results to your chosen participating provincial or territorial regulatory body for the teaching profession via your Pathways to Teach Canada account.

You can apply to more than one provincial or territorial regulatory body for the teaching profession; however, you will be required to pay a fee for each additional province or territory.
