Get Certified to Teach
The participating provincial and territorial regulatory bodies for the teaching profession in Canada retain exclusive jurisdiction to grant or deny certification to applicants.
Each provincial and territorial regulatory body has specific certification requirements, which internationally educated teachers (IETs) must meet to teach in a given Canadian province or territory.
For example, some provinces and territories may require a work permit before certification. If you’d like to apply to teach in Canada, make sure to verify the specific requirements of your target province or territory.

Regulatory bodies for the teaching profession
Each participating provincial and territorial regulatory body for the teaching profession’s website provides information on the specific requirements for obtaining certification to teach in their respective province or territory in Canada.
Please visit the website of your chosen provincial and territorial regulatory body for more information about pursuing the teaching profession in Canada.
How Pathways to Teach Canada is involved
Our organization streamlines the process for IETs who wish to teach in Canada by providing a single entry point for the first step of their certification process. Pathways to Teach Canada supports IETs through the first step of the certification process but DOES NOT grant certification to applicants.
Pathways to Teach Canada provides credential and/or language services for 10 participating provincial and territorial regulatory bodies for the teaching profession in Canada. You may have to complete one or both of these assessments directly with us if you decide to pursue the teaching profession in Canada in any of the following provinces or territories:
- British Columbia: British Columbia accepts the LCATP, among other language competency assessments.
- Manitoba
- New Brunswick
- Newfoundland and Labrador
- Northwest Territories
- Nova Scotia
- Nunavut
- Ontario : The credential assessment report provided by Pathways to Teach Canada is NOT accepted by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT), and the OCT will conduct its own credential assessment. The OCT does, however, accept the LCATP, among other language competency assessments.
- Prince Edward Island
- Saskatchewan
We do not provide assessment services for three provinces/territories in Canada. If you are interested in teaching in these locations, you will need to begin your certification process directly with their provincial or territorial regulatory body:
