Assessing your credentials and your language competency
To initiate the certification process with any of the participating provincial or territorial regulatory bodies for the teaching profession through Pathways to Teach Canada, you must complete a credentials assessment. Depending on the language of your teacher education program, you may also need to undergo a language proficiency assessment.
Credentials Assessment : What to expect with World Education Services (WES) Canada
Pathways to Teach Canada has partnered with World Education Services (WES) Canada to evaluate the credentials of Internationally Educated Teachers (IETs) wishing to settle in a participating province or territory. WES provides candidates with a convenient online application portal where they can get detailed instructions regarding required documents and track the status of their evaluations. These tools and services are available and accessible at anytime.
WES will conduct a course-by-course evaluation that identifies and describes each of your credentials. The evaluation contains:
- the name of the credential;
- the requirements for entry;
- the program length;
- a list of all courses completed at the postsecondary level;
- a Canadian semester credit and grade equivalent for each course; and
- a Canadian grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale
- the mode, length and supervision of your teaching practicum.
In addition, WES will also collect some specific information and documents, on behalf of Pathways to Teach Canada, such as:
- your proof of identification;
- your Statement of Professional Standing for each certificate your hold;
- any additional degrees you may have;
- your professional information, such as certification/authorization to teach, teaching experience.
You can find the complete list of required documents here: @TODO
Make sure you use the Pathways to Teach Canada portal to get your credentials assessed by WES. If you try to start the process with WES directly, you will be redirected to Pathways to Teach Canada.
The Language Competency Assessment for the Teaching Profession (LCATP)
IETs seeking certification in a participating province and territory must demonstrate their ability to communicate in one of Canada's official language if their teacher education was not in French or in English by taking the LCATP.
The LCATP is a test that comprises four one-hour-long online modules, which assess your writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills. The test is powered by XpressLab software, is available in either English or French, and is proctored remotely in real-time by ManagExam.
The LCATP will assess your knowledge of language and grammar, and it will also measure specific language competencies that are essential to teach effectively in English‐first language and French‐first‐language majority and minority contexts.
The test questions presented in the LCATP are all related to the teaching profession itself and are linked to teaching competencies in three domains of practice—instruction and assessment, classroom management, and communication with parents and other professionals—as identified in the Speaking for Excellence: Language Competencies for Effective Teaching Practice report.
The test provides an assessment of an applicant’s language proficiency in an environment specific to teaching. The test does not assess an applicant’s knowledge of a specific teaching subject.
You can take the LCATP even if you live outside the country.
Applicants will be asked to demonstrate their language competency when applying for certification in most provinces and territories. You may need to provide:
- acceptable LCATP results in French or English; or
- evidence of completion of a teacher education program in French or English.
